Knik Glacier is roughly 25 miles long and, in places, five miles wide — a river of ice large enough to swallow the town it neighbours several times over. It descends from the Chugach Mountains east of Palmer and terminates in a lake of its own making, where icebergs calve and drift through summer.
The glacier's modern reputation was built partly on absence.
