Knik Glacier moves. It advances and retreats along a 25-mile tongue of compressed ice that drains the Chugach Mountains into the Knik River, and in the twentieth century it did so violently enough to dam a lake.
Lake George formed behind the glacier's snout each year, then burst through in a jökulhlaup — a glacial outburst flood — that swept the valley below. The last major release came in 1966. Guides read the ice daily, because landing zones shift as crevasses open and close.
Knik has also become shorthand for Alaska on screen, standing in for polar landscapes in film and advertising.
